ABOUT THE ARTISTS

CRISTIAN PUIG, guitarist, composer, singer

[textwrap_image align=”left” width=”150″]https://www.berdole.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/cristianpuig.png[/textwrap_image]Cristian Puig is a Flamenco guitarist, composer, and singer with Gypsy roots in Jerez de la Frontera, Spain, and a string of artistic successes in film, in the recording studio, and live on stage. He played the role of guitarist and singer “Joaquin” in the Alliance Theatre’s 2013 production of “Zorro”, and he has worked in films, such as “A Late Quartet”, for which he composed Flamenco music for the soundtrack. He performs as a Flamenco singer and guitarist across the United States of America and with his Flamenco trio Puig-Sanchez-Moreno in his hometown of New York. Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Cristian Puig is the son of flamenco singer Gloria Monreal and Flamenco guitarist Pablo Puig. As a teenager, Cristian began his studies in classical guitar at the conservatory of Manuel de Falla as well as Flamenco guitar with his father. Soon he took classes in Flamenco guitar with Quique de Cordoba and furthered his studies in jazz, bossa nova and contemporary music. In 1990 he formed and toured South America with his group Rabat, fusing jazz, bossa nova and Flamenco. Cristian released the CD “Entre Cuerdas” featuring Flamenco-jazz fusion, as well as another entitled “Inflam Project”, which crosses Indian and Flamenco styles.

EL GAMBIMBAS, singer
[textwrap_image align=”leftt” width=”150″]https://www.berdole.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/image3.jpeg[/textwrap_image]Alejandro Luján, “El Gambimbas” has made a career of singing pa’ atrás, which is a term in Flamenco circles that means he sings in performances with dancers in theaters and festivals. He has toured Europe and performed with dancers, such as Rafael Amarga, Juan de Juan, and Jairo Barrull, as well as guitarists, such as Jeronimo Maya, Ruben Campos, and Rafael Fajardo. El Gambimbas was born in Granada, Spain, where he began his studies of Flamenco singing when he was 8 years old. At age 16, he won first prize in the Pepe Luis Habichuela singing contest for young artists. While he has learned from many masters, El Gambimbas recognizes Flamenco singer Antonio “El Colorao” as his most influential teacher and mentor.

EMRAH KOTAN, percussionist

[textwrap_image align=”left” width=”150″]https://www.berdole.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/emrah_voss.jpg[/textwrap_image]Emrah Kotan is a classically trained percussionist who came to the United States from his native Turkey and received a master’s degree in Jazz Studies from Georgia State University. After playing some of the most renowned venues in the world such as the Istanbul Jazz Festival, Playboy Jazz Festival and The Blue Note in New York, Emrah is one of the most sought after musicians in the Atlanta music scene. His unique musical ability transcends many genres and cultures. He is involved in various musical projects, including his own, and is the drummer/percussionist for Grammy award winning artist, India.Arie. His debut album, The New Anatolian Experience, is a collection of original compositions and arrangements that fuse world music and jazz, creating stylistically sophisticated vibes and a genuine model of personal artistic expression. Aside from performing, Emrah is an enthusiastic music educator who has conducted master classes and has taught many students over the years, some of which who have been awarded music scholarships by the colleges of their choice. CARLOS MENCHACA, dancer

[textwrap_image width=”250″ align=”left”]https://www.berdole.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/carlosmenchaca_photobyMorganSmith.jpg[/textwrap_image]Carlos Menchaca is known in Flamenco circles across the country for his energetic, highly physical interpretation of rhythm and movement. He works full-time as a solist with Yjastros: The American Flamenco Repertory Company under the direction of Joaquin Encinias and with Flamenco Aparicio in Washington, D.C., which is directed by Edwin Aparicio. He has performed professionally since age 16, and in recent years performed with with Noche Flamenca, led by Martín Santangelo. He also performs with Flamenco companies across the U.S.A., including La Juerga Flamenco Ensemble, a Flamenco collective led by Illeana Gomez and Alejandro Pais in Albuquerque, N.M., Flamenco Denver, under the direction of Sevillana María Vazquez, and collaborations arranged by Berdolé. Menchaca currently teaches and choreographs for the Conservatory of Flamenco Arts in Albuquerque, N.M., and is part of the adjunct dance faculty for the charter school, Tierra Adentro: The New Mexico School for Academics, Art and Artesania. His tenacity on stage is the result of a lifetime of dance and a long dedication to Flamenco. He began studying dance at the age of 10 under the instruction of his aunt, accomplished director and dancer, Belinda Menchaca. His training included Mexican Folkloric Dance, Spanish Classical and Ballet, as well as Flamenco performance and training with some of the most influential artists in the field via the University of New Mexico. MARILIA QUEVEDO, dancer

[textwrap_image width=”150″ align=”left”]https://www.berdole.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/marilia1.jpeg[/textwrap_image]Marlilia Quevedo has enjoyed a career as a professional Flamenco dancer, after training with the masters of the art form in Spain and across South America and working as a professional Argentinian tango dancer. In her home of Argentina and nearby Uruguay, she has performed for the past two decades in renowned Flamenco trablaos and theaters, in major universities and at Instituto Ibero, dedicated to the arts of Spain in the Americas. She currently resides in New York, where she performs regularly in the many Flamenco tablaos in the city.

“JULIE MOON”, dancer

[textwrap_image width=”150″ align=”left”]https://www.berdole.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/julie_swirl.jpg[/textwrap_image]Flamenco dancer Julie Galle Baggenstoss “Julie Moon” has performed and choreographed Flamenco with the Atlanta Opera, Georgia State University’s School of Music, The Latin American Association, Coves Darden P.R.E., and at universities and museums from the Southeast to the Midwest. She is a member of Emory University’s Dance Program, where she teaches Flamenco as part of the university curriculum. Julie is a former instructor of the Atlanta Ballet, and teaches for organizations such as Woodruff Arts Center, the Rialto Center for the Arts, the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese, the Foreign Language Association of Georgia, and Georgia Public Libraries. Julie’s dance style reflects continuing education and years of classes with Spanish dance teachers. Off stage, Julie produces Flamenco performances and educational seminars involving Spanish Flamenco artists in residence in the United States of America via her company Berdolé. Julie is the co-founder of jaleolé, a grass-roots marketing organization that shaped Atlanta’s Flamenco landscape for a decade.
